Rep. Zeldin Joins LI & NYC Animal Rights & Advocacy Groups in Condemning the Slaughter of Thousands of Dogs During China’s Yulin Festival
Yesterday, Congressman Lee Zeldin stood alongside animal rights organizations and rescue dogs, adorned in purple ribbons, to condemn the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. Zeldin, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, joined by Global Strays of Manhattan, Suffolk County SPCA, Southampton Animal Shelter and other animal rights advocates to publically condemn the slaughter of over 10,000 dogs during the annual Festival in Yulin, China.
Every year, thousands of dogs are beaten, tortured and mistreated before being slaughtered during the this horrific ritual. Participants believe that the most tender meat, is produced by the animals who die during the cooking process. As a result of this grotesque theory, the animals are viciously tortured before being boiled alive. A majority of these dogs are stolen from loving homes, often still wearing collars at the slaughterhouses.
With the support of animal advocacy groups across the region, Congressman Zeldin called for passage of House Resolution 752. The resolution which is cosponsored by Congressman Zeldin, both condemns the dog meat festival in Yulin, China, as well as urges China to stop the dog meat trade. The resolution, introduced May 25th, 2016, has received incredible bipartisan support with over 50 cosponsors in the House.
Congressman Zeldin reaffirmed his commitment to the humane treatment of all animals, throughout the World and called upon Congress to act quickly to pass this resolution as a step in the right direction.
