Smithtown Youth Bureau Assemble 210 Ready for School Packets for Needy Families At Annual Family Community Service Event

Smithtown students and parents were in full Community Service Mode last Monday, as some 170 volunteers put together 210 Ready for School Packets for struggling families. The event was held at Smithtown Landing Country Club & Lessing’s Catering facility on Monday July 25th, 2016. Each year the Smithtown Youth Bureau orchestrates an Annual Family Pool Party, which is intended to serve a dual purpose, in bringing parents and children together to have some fun while doing a little good for those less fortunate.

ready for schoolThe event was made possible by the Smithtown Youth Bureau, Youth Advisory Board, and Smithtown Departments of Recreation, Parks and Public Safety in addition to Lessings, who donated the Nissequogue Room after a second rain delay prevented the pool party. This program, primarily sponsored by the Town of Smithtown was made possible thanks to the additional donations provided by Target of Commack, Verizon Wireless in Smithtown, Huntington Learning Center and the Smithtown Children’s Foundation.

After all the hard work putting together the “Ready for School” supply packets, the fun began with a day filled with complimentary music, pizza, watermelon and cookies. A smorgasbord of games and prizes were also organized by the Youth Advisory Board. Special guest balloon artist Colleen Sambuco, volunteered her talent with her husband John. The two spent the evening creating colorful balloon creations for all the children to take home. Students were given community service credit for assembling the 210 ready for school packets. However, every helper both big and small, left Smithtown Landing with a satisfied feeling that can only come from doing some good to help a total stranger.

How the  Ready for School Packets are Distributed:

Those less fortunate families are identified in a confidential manner through the school social workers throughout Commack, Hauppauge, Kings Park, & Smithtown districts. In addition, families will receive Ready for School supply packets in September via the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry. The Youth Bureau will also provide FREE Commemorative Marble Notebooks to schools town-wide.
