The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for our area in effect until Midnight tonight. Snow will fall before 11am, with a mix of snow and sleet until 2pm. Freezing rain and sleet is expected through the afternoon. Wind chill values are estimated between 15 and 20 with gusts as high as 29 mph. Little to no ice accumulation is expected. Two to Four inches of total snow and sleet accumulation is possible.
Drivers should watch for black ice and dangerous road conditions. Please use caution and slow speeds while operating a motor vehicle.
Supervisor Ed Wehrheim and the Director of Public Safety, Chief John Valentine, have coordinated all efforts between emergency responders. The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will operate through the weather advisory.
Superintendent of Highways Robert Murphy reports crews are out applying Beet Juice, Salt, and Sand on the roads to prevent icing conditions. A Fleet of 100 Plows and Spreaders are on the roads working through the duration of the storm.
Smithtown residents are asked to use extreme caution and remember to travel with a winter survival kit. In the event you become stranded, stay with your vehicle and call authorities.

Animals & Family Pets: All domestic animals should remain indoors during the freezing temperatures, with the exception of allowing dogs to venture out to go to the bathroom. Elderly Neighbors & Special Needs individuals: Please check on your neighbors with disabilities, special needs, and senior citizens. Make sure they have an emergency phone, plenty of water, food and blankets. Ask if they have someone to call in the event of an emergency.
