Resident survivors at Gurwin Jewish Participate in #WeRemember global memorial event with photos live-streamed at Auschwitz Concentration Camp

weremember2Holocaust Survivors from around the world united together online in the largest global memorial event ever. Resident survivors at Gurwin Jewish (Fay J. Lindner Residences) assisted living community  in Commack got to pay homage to loved ones and share their own stories through the #WeRemember international social media campaign.  Each Resident survivor proudly held up  #WeRemember signs and uploaded the photos and to Twitter and Facebook.

The World Jewish Congress launched the #WeRemember social media campaign to commemorate the holocaust, with People around the world.  In the days leading up to the International Holocaust Memorial Day supporters all over the world posted #WeRemember photos to social media. The photos were then live-streamed on a jumbotron at Auschwitz, Poland, near crematorium 2.  Resident survivors at Gurwin Jewish~Fay J. Lindner Residences, an assisted living community in Commack, were among the survivors to be a part of this revolutionary digital campaign.  This year marks the 72nd anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.

“My father told me to do everything I could to survive, to get out and tell the world what was happening.” – Sally Birnbaum, an Auschwitz Survivor

weremember1Seven Gurwin assisted living residents, including survivors of the Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz  concentration camps, posed with their “We Remember” signs. Some of whom fulfilled promises to family members who perished in the genocide, to “live to tell the story,” while others were eager to participate in a remembrance project with an international reach.

World Jewish Congress believed it was critical to create a global social media movement to remember the Holocaust. As each year passes, the world loses more survivors. Genocides are still taking place in third world countries. Hence, the need to educate future generations about the atrocities of the holocaust has never been greater.  Robert Singer, World Jewish Congress CEO, believes the campaign will “engage the next generation, because soon it will be their responsibility to tell the story and ensure that humanity never forgets.”
