Volunteers Wanted: Smithtown Animal Shelter

CALLING ALL ANIMAL LOVERS

As part of the Smithtown Animal Shelter community outreach initiative, all residents and non-residents alike, who love caring for our four-legged companions, are invited to join the shelter’s volunteer program. Assist in daily maintenance, walk the pups, cuddle up in a corner with a cat or help promote the adoption of some very special would be pets. Upcoming programs in need of extra help include special fundraising efforts, digital adoption content, the shelter’s Amazon Wish List and plenty more ways to lend a hand.

As the first ever in Suffolk County; the Animal Shelter Advisory Council was created by Councilwoman Lynne Nowick to improve the welfare and quality of life for some 700 animals passing through the shelter year round. The collaboration includes Shelter Director George Beatty, appointed animal welfare experts Lucille DeFina, Diane Madden and animal welfare attorney, Elizabeth Stein. Since it’s conception in March of this year, the group has orchestrated the hire of an in-house Veterinary Technician, increased medical care, humane spay/neuter program for homeless/feral cats, improved quality of food and a brand new IT set up. The new computer and accounting systems have created greater accountability for the health care of all rescues and shelter animals in addition to aiding in a greater web presence for all current candidates for adoptions.

Whether you are in the market for a new member of the family or have a few hours to spend doing something noble, the doors are open at the Smithtown Animal Shelter. Witness the progress of the Smithtown Animal Shelter reformation with your own eyes or get involved in one or more of the exciting new projects.  As animal cruelty prevention month draws to a close, take advantage of an extraordinary way to change the lives of so many grateful (and adorable) creatures.

NOTE: All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age or older.
