Smithtown’s Department of Planning and Department Liaison Councilman Thomas McCarthy released an end of year update, citing over two million square footage in commercial development projects are nearing completion, approved for construction, or are pending final approvals over the course of the last 11 months. This record, combined with the modernization of our Town Code and Creation of a Master Plan with the community’s involvement, speaks to the new administration’s objective to address the Brain Drain and need for Downtown Revitalization in less than one year.

Commercial projects under construction total 664,787 square feet of Development. Approved commercial projects awaiting construction total 181,524 square feet of commercial development. Projects awaiting approvals account for 563,131 square feet of commercial development. Residential projects nearing completion account for 193,994 square feet of commercial development. Residential projects approved for construction account for 217,329 square feet of commercial development. And there are approximately 279,480 square feet in commercial projects that have been issued Certificates of Occupancy.

Among the properties being developed include formerly blighted sites such as the Smithtown Concrete plant, soon to be home to CarMax. The vacant lot that was once Nassau Suffolk Lumber and Supply Corp. is now pending construction on the Lofts at Maple & Main. The many projects address the need for millennial housing, with affordable housing units and walkable communities coming to Commack, Smithtown and Kings Park. New projects under construction for the Hauppauge Industrial park include A&Z Pharmaceutical and Bactolac Pharmaceutical, creating competitive and appealing jobs for the young business professional.
