Congratulations to the High School East varsity football team, who recently completed an impressive season with a 6-2 regular season record (6-3 overall). The team hosted East Islip in their first-round playoff matchup and led late in the third quarter before the visitors staged a hard-fought comeback, scoring the go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Although they fell short of their goal to win a LI championship, the HSE Bulls have much to be proud of this season. During the East Islip game, HSE quarterback John Daniggelis surpassed 5,000 total yards (passing and rushing) for his varsity football career. He also finished in the top 10 in passing and top 15 in rushing in Section XI this season. The team’s head coach is Pete Melore.
Gymnasts Raise Money for Cancer Research
The Smithtown gymnastics team recently participated in a “Kips for Cancer” event at West Islip, raising $1,200 for the American Cancer Society.
For this West Islip invitational, the gymnasium was draped in pink and event and gymnasts were encouraged to wear pink leotards and pink ribbons in their hair and decorate a “march in” T-shirt recognizing a loved one or friend lost to cancer that read “I am kipping for….” They were also asked to bring in a picture of that person, if possible, and to secure sponsors and participate in an optional 15-minute kipathon (kipping pull-ups) to raise money on behalf of the one they were representing. A dedication wall was created for the audience, gymnasts, coaches and judges to place a name or picture of a loved one lost to cancer.
The Suffolk County Gymnastics Coaches Association sponsored Kips for Cancer. Kathleen Eagan is the Smithtown gymnastics head coach.
