The Fourth Annual Row for Autism Regatta will take place this morning, April 18, 2015 at North Hempstead Beach Park, setting sail at 8 am. Gear up for lots of food, fun and an awards celebration, all in the name of autism awareness.
The US Rowing sanctioned event will feature On-Land and On-the-Water Learn To Row areas for special needs children. On Water Rowing takes place on a two-man boat with an able-bodied local student rower paired with an adaptive rower, under close supervision.
Row for Autism, originally began in 2012 with the hope to to raise funds for the Port Rowing adaptive program, which provides individuals with autism the ability to participate in the sport of rowing. Thanks to a collaboration with the autism advocacy organization; Autism Speaks, roughly 20 rowing clubs all over the tri-state area participate in the event each year. A Quarter of the proceeds from the Regatta will be donated to Autism Speaks of LI. All remaining proceeds will go towards the purchase of adaptive rowing equipment, which allows a disabled teenager to be paired with a peer mentor.
