Students Attend International Particle Physics Master Class

International Particle Physics Master Class

Look out NASA… Check out Smithtown’s budding Scientists! Physics students from both Smithtown High Schools participated in an international Particle Physics Master Class program.

“This is a fantastic and unique experience for our students… They learn about cutting-edge particle physics and the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, and they talk to real, live physicists who work on these projects.” -Dr. Gillian Winters, Smithtown High School East physics teacher

International Particle Physics Master ClassThe day long program included lectures from renown physicists at Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory, whee students learned about subatomic particles and the particle accelerators that probe their inner secrets. The group later learned how to analyze real data from the Large Hadron Collider, CERN’s 27 km particle collider.

This years International Master Class program attracted over 10,000 high school students across 47 countries. The students gathered throughout 200 nearby Universities and/or research centers for one day, unravelling the mysteries of particle physics.

On March 4, our students from Smithtown traveled to Brookhaven National Laboratory, where they would share their results with students in California, Sweden and South Africa via a video conference moderated by experts at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva.
