6th Annual Town of Brookhaven, NY Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge – Saturday, November 21st, 2015
As part of the support staff for the Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge, more than a dozen volunteers from the St. Anthony’s High School Hockey Club arrived early Saturday morning at Cedar Beach, Mt Sinai, NY . More than 1,000 people took the dive into the cold Long Island Sound to support Special Olympics. Our Skating Friars helped setup and breakdown the tents, table and chairs, along with helping direct the “Freezin for a Reason” participants back to the warming huts.
The event raised more than $150,000 for Special Olympics New York to cover equipment, training, competitions and venues. Hockey mom, Beth Allen organized our SAHC contingent, along with many of the other community events our club attends. “Our boys are great at doing anything the Director of Events asks of them”, said Mrs. Allen. “They’re willing to set up tables for T-Shirt sales or jump into the Polar Bear and Chicken costumes and pose for pictures! Our hockey players are always ready to volunteer.”
St Anthony’s Hockey Club members donate their time for community events and charity throughout the year. Their next event will be a charity hockey game v. the Long Island Rough Riders Sled Hockey team to raise awareness for special needs athletes on Saturday, January 2nd(9:30 am) at Bethpage Rink
