Spring Crafts for Kids

It’s time to take the kids to school on how cool Mom and Dad can be with a few Spring Crafts for Kids.  Springtime means mother nature comes back to life. It’s also a great opportunity to teach your children all about why Spring is so special. What better way to bond with the whole family, sneak some science and education in under the kids noses and get them away from video games, laptops and technology overload. These Spring Crafts for Kids are a blast for the whole family to take part in.

Flowering Bouquet of Crystals

spring sciUsing a pencil of crayons, twist pipe cleaners around to make a coiled flower.  Use various colors of the rainbow to create the perfect bouquet.  Attach green pipe cleaners to each coiled flower to create the stem.  Wrap the ends of the green pipe cleaners around a dowel so they can suspend in the borax solution jar without touching the bottom. Let the coils sit overnight, in the borax solution for best results. The surprise you wake up to will delight the whole family!

Borax solution:

Boil a cup or two over three cups of water in a kettle or stove pot, to assure you have enough after some of the water has evaporated. Dissolve 9 tablespoons of Borax into 3 cups of very hot water.  Stir the solution for three or four minutes, until the Borax has completely dissolved.  When the Borax solution is crystal clear, it is ready to pour into any glass jar. Mason Jars work great for this project!

Bird Feed Easter Eggs

eggsUse 3 inch plastic Fillable Easter Eggs as molds. Party City sells these in six packs for under one dollar. Lightly coat the molds using vegetable spray. Mix eight cups of store bought bird seed with a third of a cup of gelatin and one and a half cups of water together until well combined.   Using a teaspoon, let your children pack the eggs until both sides are full. Snap together and allow the eggs to chill using a cardboard egg carton to hold them. Avoid styrofoam cartons for best results. Leave the eggs in the refrigerator for three hours. Remove the bird seed eggs from the moldings and allow the eggs to sit inside the egg carton to dry out for an additional hour. Tie the eggs with ribbon and string up on a tree next to a window, so your children can watch all the different bird breeds that enjoy the special treat!dreamcatcher

Dreamcatcher

Cut out the center of a paper plate so only the rippled edges are remaining. Punch seven or eight holes evenly around the paper plate. Using yarn or string roping string through each hole making a star like shape in the center.  Add two more punch holes through the top of the dreamcatcher for hanging. Let your child get creative, adding beads to the hanging strings or feathers, before stringing the hanging rope through the top of the plate. Decorate the paper plate with paint, glitters or crayons.  Once dry, hang above the bed to prevent bad dreams.
