After a successful first Paper Shredding event held in the Spring, the Town of Smithtown’s Department of Environment and Waterways, Municipal Services Facility, and the Department of Public Safety held the second shred event of the year over the weekend. On Saturday, October 20th, 135 households came to Town Hall throughout the day to safely shred over five tons of sensitive documents.
“This was another outstanding event providing a great service for our Residents. We shredded 5.1 tons of paper, approximately 10,200 pounds, for our residents this time around. Our entire team at the Municipal Services Facility, Department of Public Safety, and DEW really worked seamlessly with Data Shredding Service, Inc. to safely and securely dispose of sensitive documents. This is a fantastic Bi-Annual service and I am eager to plan for 2019.” – Councilman Thomas McCarthy
Once the last of the paper was shredded by the industrial strength “Shreddersaurus,” there were approximately 25 cubic yards, or 10,200 pounds, in paper collected and securely disposed of. There was a steady stream of residents coming throughout the day to have their personal papers safely destroyed.
“Events like these help people to protect themselves against identity theft while recycling at the same time. We expect these events to become even more popular in the future.” – Russ Barnett, Director of Smithtown Department of Environment and Waterways
The event took place at Town Hall on Main Street in Smithtown from 9:00 AM through 3:00 PM. The Paper Shredding service was provided by Data Shredding Service, Inc. of Corporate Drive in Hauppauge. The final total of shredded paper weighed in at 10,200 pounds, or 5.1 tons.
