The Suffolk County Women’s Bar Association recognize Smithtown Sophomores for their essay entries in a special contest for high school students.
Smithtown High School West sophomores in Christina Cone’s Social Studies class received special recognition for their entries in the Suffolk County Women in the Courts “Forming a More Perfect Union – Celebrating Women in Government and Public Service” essay contest. In the freshman/sophomore category Ryan Mayr was named first place winner, while and Dean Mattschull received second place. The two writers stood out among a pool of more than 90 entries submitted. Ryan Mayr chose to focus on the contributions of Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. Dean Mattschull’s essay was a reflection piece regarding the contributions of Eleanor Roosevelt.
In celebration of Women’s history month, the Suffolk County District Administrative Judge’s
Women in the Courts Committee invited high school students to participate in an essay contest. Students throughout the County, in grades 9-12 submitted essays on the selected topic; Forming a more perfect union- Celebrating Women in Government and Public Service. Each student essay acknowledged a woman for her contributions and leadership in public service or government, that has made our communities sensitive to a diverse society.
All entrants received certificates for participating in the essay contest. The winners in each category received cash prizes for first place ($300) and second place ($200). In addition to the monetary prize, the winners were given a chance to shadow a judge for a day, with an all-access VIP court tour.
