Smithtown Shelter Pup Chosen For Houndstown Vocational Training Camp

Deemed untrainable by two experts at non-profit facilities, Tyson, a 9 month old male Terrier/Lab mix was evaluated and taken in by the Smithtown Animal & Adoption Center. After one week of working together with the Shelter’s Chief Volunteer and Behavioral Expert Mike Gould, Tyson responded so remarkably that he was hand picked for vocational training at HoundsTown Training Camp in Ronkonkoma. Over the next 12 days, Tyson will receive intensive training which will serve a higher purpose upon adoption.

“Once he’s completed this training, Tyson will be able to be adopted by a senior who has trouble getting around, or potentially serve as a therapy dog for a Veteran or a child who is not well.” – Mike Gould, HoundsTown Charities

The Training Program will run through Wednesday, May 9th, 2018. Tyson will then be returned to the Smithtown Animal & Adoption Center where he will be placed for adoption.

“This is a very generous offer from Mr. Gould that we are extremely fortunate to be a part of. Not only will Tyson get specialized training, which will give him a better chance at finding his forever home…but it will bring new visitors to our shelter and hopefully help to place more dogs and cats in good households.” – Smithtown Supervisor Ed Wehrheim
