Valentine’s day nearly became every parents worst nightmare, when a school bus fire sent firefighters into action, during the morning school pickup. At approximately 8:30, Tuesday morning, a Smithtown school bus was in the process of picking up kids for school, when smoke began to filter from under the dashboard. The bus driver had already picked up one child, when the bus began to smoke. The School bus driver quickly got the child out of the bus and called for help.
The Smithtown Fire Department responded immediately to the intersection of Plymouth Boulevard and Parnell Drive. The bus was engulfed in flames. Thankfully the bus driver and the student evacuated and got to safety before the bus fire ignited.
Members of the Smithtown Fire Department worked quickly to get the school bus blaze under control, without any injuries to report. Firefighters were able to extinguish the bus fire and return to their stations in under an hour. Smithtown Fire Department Chiefs 4-2-31 (Landrigan) and 4-2-33 (Diecidue), Engines 4-2-1 and 4-2-5, Rescue 4-2-9, and Ambulance 4-2-6-1 responded to the Bus fire.
The Suffolk County Police Department is conducting an investigation into the bus fire.
