Two Smithtown Students have been recognized By News 12 as Scholar Athletes. Smithtown High School East’s Jackie Cuccurullo and Matt McDonnell, a senior at Smithtown High School West were both recognized for outstanding ability and leadership in athletics and academics alike.
Jackie Cuccurullo is a a five-year varsity starter and two-time captain for the Smithtown High School East varsity girls lacrosse team. Cuccurullo is an All-Division and All-County player in lacrosse. She is also the starting setter for the Varsity Volleyball team at East, where she was a member of a two league championship squads and winner of the county finals. Off the field and court, Jackie has played the clarinet for 8 years, where she performed at Carnegie with the school’s Orchestra. Jackie Cuccurullo will head to Harvard in the fall, with her score of 2160 on the SAT’s and a 99 percentile unweighted average.
Matt McDonnell is a four-year forward on the boys soccer team at Smithtown High School West. In 2013, McDonnell helped his team win the Suffolk AA title and was named a Newsday “player to watch”. He joined the football team as a kicker this past season, where he kicked a 32 and a 35 yard field goal for the team. With a 3.8 unwaited GPA and a 2000 on his SAT, Matt McDonnell will play soccer at Boston University in the Fall.
Winners of the News 12 Scholar Athlete award program are recognized at an awards dinner and presented with a $1,000 scholarship check.
