Smithtown Honors Young Exchange Student for Her Contributions to the Community

Supervisor Ed Wehrheim joined Kings Park High School Superintendent Dr. Timothy Eagen and representatives from the Kings Park Heritage Museum Award to honor Martina Segarra Ostolaza, who has been selected to receive the 2019 Leo P. Ostebo Kings Park Heritage Museum Award in excellence for outstanding internship and volunteer service to the museum.

“What a joy it is to meet a fine young citizen of the world, who traveled across the globe as a High School student… so far away from home, family and friends. In addition to her many extra curricular activities, Martina assisted the museum in their many endeavors as an intern while she lived here for the school year. I commend her on making such a rich contribution to our community.” – Supervisor Ed Wehrheim

Martina Segarra Ostolaza, originally from Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain came to the Kings Park community through the Educational Resource Development Trust (ERDT) Share Program. While spending the year in Kings Park, Martina became an intern for the Leo P. Ostebo Kings Park Heritage Museum and joined the JV Basketball & Track teams at Kings Park High School. She also performed in the Kings Park High School’s Musical production Godspell, joined the school newspaper, concert band and choir. Martina will now go back to Spain with a year’s worth of new experiences and a successful year as a Kings Parker.

About The Educational Resource Development Trust (ERDT) Share Program
Designed in 1980, the ERDT Share Program provides opportunities for people of different cultures to come together to learn about other points of view and ways of life, believing that cross-cultural understanding is fundamental to developing mutual respect and tolerance between Americans and people from around the world. The program provides cultural experiences that foster good will, tolerance and understanding through a positive people-to-people experience. ERDT places more than 700 international students a year with American host families while they attend local high schools.
