Nearly 400 graduating seniors at Smithtown High School East stormed the football field last Wednesday, during the 101st annual commencement exercise. On June 22nd, 2016, the family and friends of 398 High School Seniors celebrated their accomplishments and welcomed the Class of 2016 into the World.
The graduating class marched onto the football field to “Pomp and Circumstance”. Dr. James Grossane, Smithtown School District Superintendent of Schools, introduced the Class of 2016 and urged the students to find balance as they move to the next phase of their lives.
“Remember to dedicate yourself to your passions and beliefs… Our job as educators is complete but you will need to rely on your roots here as you spread your wings and be the best person you can be.” – James Grossane, Smithtown School District Superintendent of Schools
Benjamin Dolowich was selected by the class as Student honor speaker in place of a valedictorian or salutatorian. He promptly expressed that the individual evolution has just begun to his peers, now that the high school journey has come to an end.
“Learn how to lead so our lessons will be something that is taught to the next generation.” – Benjamin Dolowich, Smithtown H.S. East, Student Honor Speaker
Julia Esposito, the Senior class president, reflected on a look back on the years in School and possibilities that lie ahead.
“Let’s make this new chapter the best one yet… Be true to yourself, work hard, dedicate yourself and your dreams will come true.” – Julia Esposito, Smithtown East Senior Class President
The ceremony also marked the bittersweet end of a decade-long tenure for Edwin Thompson, Smithtown High School East Principal. Thompson announced his retirement earlier this year.
