Members of the chamber choir from Smithtown Central School District’s High School East joined together with volunteers from the St. James Fire Department during a memorial service held at the fire department on 9/11.
The chamber choir sang “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and student Brandon Star played “Taps” on the trumpet.
“The St. James Fire Department’s 9/11 memorial was truly a community undertaking,” said John Scomillio, a member of the St. James Fire Department and principal at Great Hollow Middle School. “Many community members either made monetary donations, donated materials, or donated their time to complete this memorial.”
The memorial not only commemorates the lives lost on 9/11 and the sacrifices many made that day, but it is also a reminder of how the nation came together that day. “It is important to the St. James Fire Department that the memorial continues to remain a community undertaking,” Scomillio said. “The students from High School East were gracious enough give up their time on a Friday evening to share their amazing talents with the community. Having students participate in this event will help to ensure that the community remains involved.”
