The Department of Public Safety hosted a swearing in ceremony for five full time members on Thursday morning. Three Park Rangers, one Fire Marshall, and one Ordinance Inspector were unanimously appointed by the Town Board during the last public meeting, held Thursday, February 14th at the Senior Center. All five new members to the department took the Oath of Office, made official and administered by Smithtown Town Clerk, Vincent Puleo.

In addition to being at the very top of a competitive Civil Service list, these individuals surpassed all others in a series of meticulous requirements for the job.” – Supervisor Ed Wehrheim
The following new members of Public Safety were selected to fill existing vacancies:
Steven Bayne, Park Ranger
Brendan Dennihy, Park Ranger
Michael Robinson, Park Ranger
Timothy Murphy, Fire Marshall
Sonya Lorrain, Ordinance Inspector

Requirements for Public Safety officers include qualifying medical, psychological, and physical agility evaluations. Peace Officer Training, as recognized by the New York State Municipal Police Training Council, is also a requirement for Park Rangers and Fire Marshalls. Those four members are scheduled to participate in the Peace Officer Academy in the Spring of 2019.
