The Town of Smithtown announced the process of updating the Comprehensive Plan. The most integral part of this process is gathering public input to define the community’s vision for the Town’s present day and Future. Residents are encouraged to participate through public workshops, an interactive website, surveys, and public hearings.
Hamlet based Community Workshops will begin with Smithtown on March 7, 2019 at 7:00 PM at the Eugene Cannataro Senior Citizens Center. Residents and students are encouraged to attend the community workshops in their respective hamlets to contribute input towards the immediate and long-term approach for smart growth and development, protection, and community enhancement.
Community members can complete the online survey on the Comprehensive Plan’s website at PublicInput.com/Smithtown.
“I truly believe that every resident should have the chance to voice his or her vision for our community…Creating a process where they will have the Opportunity to help shape their hometown hamlet by design is the very definition of the people’s government.” – Supervisor Edward R. Wehrheim
The comprehensive master plan will include a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis to goals, the strategies to achieve those goals, and the legal basis for zoning changes in accordance with the plan. This will provide a framework towards preserving the Town’s character, ensuring diversity, supporting investment, and promoting desired changes, with the help of shared ideas from the Town of Smithtown residents.
“No stone will be left unturned when it comes to planning the future of our Township. This comprehensive plan will serve as a guide, not just for us, but for our children and grandchildren.” – Councilman Tom McCarthy, Liaison to the Planning Department
