Suffolk County Police Officers in the Seventh Precinct responded to reports yesterday, just after noon, of an unconscious man found floating in the water at Smith Point County Park in Mastic Beach. Witnesses accounted for seeing the man swimming one minute and then found him floating close to shore, shortly thereafter. Beach Patrons ran to the shore to assist in removing the 48 year old man, identified as Kerry Agost, from the water. The Good Samaritans attempted to perform CPR until authorities arrived.
Kerry Agosta was transported by first responders, to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center, in East Patchogue. He was officially pronounced dead by doctors shortly after. An investigation is currently underway by Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad Detectives. At the present time, it is not clear whether Agosta drowned due to medical conditions or other circumstances. Witnessesses and Suffolk County Police attested that Agosta was swimming further down the beach, away from lifeguard supervision.
