Registration for the inaugural Suffolk County Marathon kicked off today with County Executive Steve Bellone first in line. The September 13th marathon and half marathon are part of the ‘Healthy Suffolk’ campaign, designed to encourage and assist residents to Live Well, Be Active and Eat Smart. The planned route will begin and end at Heckscher State Park, concluding with A Taste of Long Island Wine and Food Festival, designed to showcase and drive tourism along the Great South Bay. The Marathon has been a Boston Marathon qualifier, which will undoubtedly draw runners from around the country, as well as high end sponsors and vendors.
In partnership with New York State for race coordination and planning, the marathon is designed to be cost neutral through sponsorship and entry fees. In addition, to a special veteran’s race category, profits will go to Suffolk County Veteran organizations.
About the Course:
The course will start at the entrance to Heckscher State Park, go north to Montauk Highway and head east. It will loop through St. John’s University and past the historic Bourne Mansion before continuing along to downtown Patchogue. After looping around downtown Patchogue, the runners will return to Heckscher State Park via Montauk Highway. There will be designated cheering sections in Oakdale, Sayville, Bayport, Blue Point, and Patchogue with live music and entertainment.
