Smithtown School District Elementary Schools Participate in Pick a Reading Partner Program
Children throughout the Elementary Schools in the district participated in the Pick a Reading Partner program this month. The objective of the program is to encourage parents and children to read together, strengthening reading and communication skills through bonds at home. Parents were asked to read with their children for a minimum of 15 minutes every day. Children and chosen reading partners worked together in choosing different genres and reading materials, instilling fun, imagination and a love of reading.
From January 26th through February 12th, Dogwood Elementary School took part in the Pick a Reading Partner program. To help spark an interest in reading different genres of books, Smithtown Central School District’s Assistant Superintendent for Personnel, Karen Ricigliano was a guest reader in Jillian Terlato’s fourth-grade classroom.
Accompsett Elementary School participated in the Pick a Reading Partner program from February 1st through the 12th. This year’s theme was “Cosmic Connections: May the Reading Force Be With You.” On February 8th, award-winning Children’s Book Author, Steve Metzger, visited the school to share some of his favorite books.
Pick a Reading Partner program (PARP) activities included Bookmark Contest Day, Intergalactic Crazy Hair & Hat Day, Mystery Reader, Bingo Day, Wear Your Planet Color Day, Book Swap Day and Reading Reunion Day. The last day of the program was Comfy Cozy Day, where students and teachers all got to wear pajamas to school.
