The Peanut Patch – A New Food Allergy Treatment

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a study in 2013, stating that the number of reported food allergies among children (between 1997- 2011) has increased by approximately 50%. Even worse, there is no factual evidence or clear reason as to why. While cutting edge research and food studies are paving the way to improve quality of life, one French company has taken giant strides in the form of a Patch. The Peanut Patch (Viaskin® Peanut) from DBV Technologies is designed to reduce sensitivity to peanuts.

This little miracle patch is intended to avoid potentially life-threatening allergic reactions by gradually introducing calculated doses of peanut proteins through the skin. According to DBV Technologies, the proprietary technology platform based on based on epicutaneous immunotherapy (EPIT®) delivers biologically active compounds to the immune system without passing through the bloodstream.  Currently Viaskin® Peanut is in global phase III of FDA trials, making it the first food allergy drug to reach this level of the clinical process.

Game Changing Treatment:

Before the peanut patch, there was no treatment to prevent allergic reactions, short of avoiding contact with the food and epipen injections. The trials prove that the average child, adolescent and adult increased tolerance levels to Peanuts from wearing the Viaskin Peanut Patch. Now, children and adults alike, who once lived in fear that they might come into accidental contact with Peanuts, can hope for a life more ordinary. Thanks to this revolutionary platform, DBV Technologies is currently undergoing various FDA Trials for Viaskin® Milk and Viaskin® Egg. The Peanut Patch is expected to be made available to the public by 2018.
