Officers Rescue Litter of Newborn Puppies

A litter of newborn puppies got a new lease on life yesterday, thanks to Suffolk County Police, the SPCA in Smithtown and Brookhaven Town Animal Control. The fast acting collaboration between organizations resulted in a happy ending for the litter, who were rescued from under a shed.

Officers from the Seventh Precinct arrived at the Shirley Residence at approximately 11 a.m. Friday morning after a 911 call came in reporting animals in distress under a shed. The first newborn puppy was found under a heap of leaves. Shortly after the officer heard the remaining pups crying underneath the floor of a shed.

Emergency Services Officers quickly responded to action, using power tools to remove the shed floorboards. With assistance from Suffolk County SPCA and Brookhaven Town Animal Control, Emergency Services and Seventh Precinct Officers were able to safely extract the remaining six terrier mix puppies and the mama and papa pups (Yorkshire Terrier and Terrier Mix). The dogs were returned to their owner at the residence where they were rescued.

“This was a great collaboration between agencies. The SPCA truly appreciates working together in the rescue efforts put forth by Brookhaven Animal Control and Shelter, Suffolk County Police and Emergency Services.” – Suffolk County SPCA Detective Paul Llobell

NY State Law provides that there is to be but one SPCA per county in the State. That means those checks to the ASPCA, while a wonderfully good deed, go to New York City… not your own community.  For more information or to support the Suffolk County SPCA, Visit them online or click here.
