Congratulations are in order for two high schools in our area. Both Northport and Smithtown H.S. West have been named Scholar-Athlete Schools of Distinction by  the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.  Only 32 High Schools were given this prestigious award, Statewide for the 2015-16 school year.

“Congratulations to all of the student-athletes, coaches and faculty that work hard every day to ensure that our students excel in both the classroom and on the athletic fields. Great job!” – Paul Klimuszko, Northport-East Northport Director of Physical Education, Athletics and Health

Northport High School has earned the Scholar-Athlete Schools of Distinction Award for it’s second year.

Smithtown H.S. West met its criteria for the distinguished title, with 30 varsity sports teams earning a 90% GPA or higher.

The mission of the NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete School of Distinction Awards is to unite athletics and academics, encouraging students to excel both on the field and in the classroom. In order to qualify, every student playing on a Varsity team from Northport and Smithtown H.S. West schools all had to achieve a cumulative GPA of 90 percent or higher.

Established in the 2002-03 school year, the NYSPHSAA honors schools emphasize the importance of academic success in the student-athlete body. In Addition, the Scholar-Athlete Team Award; which began in the 1991-92 school year, unites varsity coaches by challenging each teams to achieve statewide honor.
