On December 16th, an emaciated stray dog was found wandering on Carriage House Court in Smithtown and immediately taken to a local animal hospital. The female labrador was estimated to be between eight and nine years old, weighed a mere 53 pounds, was missing most of her hair, and had a number of noticeable growths on her skin. Despite her frail condition, the labrador’s nature was very much gentle and affectionate. She was quickly named Noelle, symbolizing the holiday and the birth of her second chance at a loving home.
Reports of a skinny black labrador began in the Fall in Hauppauge, usually after it had rained. Residents and Good Samaritans posted videos from their security and doorbell cameras on social media. Smithtown Animal Control Officers were able to set traps in areas where she had been last spotted. Thanks to caring neighbors, posting sightings via security cameras, and devoted ACO’s, Noelle was caught and safely brought to a local emergency room, where she was assessed and treated.
Noelle gained weight and strength at the Smithtown Animal Shelter for the next ten days, quickly becoming a favorite among volunteers and staff. Her photo updates caught the attention of New York State Retriever Rescue, Inc (NYSRR) who offered to foster and help place Noelle in a “Furrever Home.”
Thanks to the devoted network at NYSRR, Noelle enjoyed the holidays with a loving family, and was cleared for surgery shortly after. The growths on Noelle’s body were successfully removed without issue. She was able to heal beside a NYSRR Volunteer Foster Family, who took care of Noelle until her adoption was made final. Noelle’s hair is growing back and she enjoys every single meal.
