Local Residents Storm the Beach for a New Years Polar Bear Swim
Hundreds of Long Islanders from our area participated in a sub zero countdown on New Years Day at the 7th Annual Polar Bear Swim at Steers Beach in Northport. The water temperature was approximately 50 degrees F. which was warm compared to the air temperature, at 39 degrees F. But that didn’t stop residents from Smithtown, Hauppauge, Northport, Huntington and surrounding areas, dressed in superhero costumes, seasonal characters and wild animals, from taking the polar plunge in the name of charity. Adults and young children, no older than ten years of age, dove in the freezing water, fearlessly to help the Ecumenical Lay Council Food Pantry in Northport.
The polar plunge is a Troop 410 tradition, each January 1st, with the Northport FD Smoke Eaters as partners, who assist in recruiting local business sponsors and daring swimmers. The annual event is held to benefit the Ecumenical Lay Council Food Pantry, in support of the Boy Scouts of America “Scouting for Food” National initiative. The Annual Polar Bear Swim is Troop 410’s flagship fundraising event. Combined with their annual pancake breakfast, the troop expects to raise close to $7,000 for the Northport Food Pantry this year. Residents who could not participate are still welcome to donate via mail: BSA Troop 410, 25 Rose Ct, Northport NY 11768. Checks should be made payable to BSA Troop 410
