The countdown to 2017 is here! But, not everyone wants to spend hundreds of dollars on New Years Eve events, dressing up or attempting to find a babysitter for the night. Why not entertain at home and countdown to the new year with your children? All you savvy 2017 New Years hostesses, entertaining guests with children on the VIP list… fear not!  We have curated a list of easy and fun crafts and games that are guaranteed to keep the kids busy until the stroke of midnight. The best part is that you most likely already have most of the materials at home.

  • Glow in the dark duct tape
  • Plastic water bottles or glass (depending on age)
  • Glow stick necklaces
  • Black light bulb

Replace a light bulb in the room with the black light bulb. Wrap a piece of the glow in the dark duct tape around each of the bottles. Next, adhere each bottle to the floor with a piece of folded duct tape attached to the bottoms of each bottle. Assemble each glowing necklace and turn on the black light lamp. Let the kids toss each necklace around the bottles.

  • Balloons
  • Duck Tape
  • Decorative tapes (scrapbooking tape, pattern tapes) Stickers, Colored paper for decorating {optional}
  • Confetti and tinsel strands

Knot the opening end of the balloon. Cut the tip off the top of the balloon. Pull the balloon up and around the toilet paper tube and secure well with the duck tape. Let the kids decorate each of their own confetti poppers using the stickers, colored paper and decorative tapes. When the time is right, fill up each confetti popper with a scoop or two of confetti. Show the kids how to launch the poppers by pulling down on the balloon end and releasing like a slingshot.

  • 2 Cup flour
  • 1 Cup salt
  • 2 Cup water
  • 2 TB vegetable oil
  • 4 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1½- 1 cup glitter (whatever colors you have handy mixed together will do)

Mix all ingredients in a saucepan (children can help with this step). At this point the play dough will resemble thick pancake batter. Add a cup to 1 1/2 cups of glitter and enjoy!

  • 5 oz. bottle of Clear Elmer’s glue
  • Metallic Silver or Gold liquid watercolor (kid-friendly: Sargent Art washable watercolor)
  • Purex liquid starch
  • Silver or Gold glitter

Pour the entire bottle of glue into a bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of either silver or gold liquid watercolor to the glue and mix well. Add silver or gold glitter and mix together. Next, Mix 4 tablespoons of liquid starch. Add an additional 2 tablespoons of the liquid starch. Repeat this step again, until you have a thick doughy-like consistency. Optional: repeat this process using the other metallic liquid watercolor.
