Nesaquake Teen Named NY Islanders Hometown Hero

Back in January, Smithtown Today featured an inspiring story about a Nesaquake Seventh grader, who created a special fundraiser to sponsor a VetDog puppy.  His successful fundraising efforts quickly generated attention from the community, elected officials and the press. Matthew Redlein’s determination to improve the quality of life for Veterans and first responders, has resulted in raising over $27,000 in charitable contributions. This past Tuesday, March 29th, 2016 the thirteen-year old was honored, as the NY Islanders Hometown Hero, in front of a packed house at the Barclays Center.

vet_dogs_mattMatthew Redlein was chosen to be this month’s Islanders Hometown Hero (presented by New York Community Bank) for his outstanding contribution to the community. Matthew was recognized during the Islanders game against the Hurricanes, with an introduction via arena video boards. He was given a custom Islanders Jersey and tickets to the game, along with a unique Barclays Center experience.

Matthew Redlein’s
fundraising efforts inspired the staff, parents and fellow students at Nesaquake Middle school to get involved. This incredible thirteen-year old started with a fundraising page online. With the support of the Nesaquake Middle School community, Matthew orchestrated charitable events, from upcoming movie nights and lollipop sales to creating custom Nesaquake VetDog fundraising bracelets. As of today, Matthew has raise more than $27,000 and has no plans of stopping.
