Two Smithtown students have named National Merit Scholarships. Smithtown High School East senior Sanjana Eranki and Samantha Catalano, a senior at SHS West were picked for the scholarship out of some 15,000 finalists.  Both Merit Scholarship students were selected based on their abilities, skills and accomplishments.

The National Merit Scholarship Competition evaluates participants based on academic record, two SAT scores, an official written recommendation from the school, extracurricular activities, leadership, a personal essay, curricula and grading system

Smithtown High School senior, Samantha Catalano has chosen to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in the fall. She plans to pursue an undergraduate degree in biology. Smithtown High School East senior Sanjana Eranki is still undecided on her college choice at this time.
