A group of Mills Pond faculty, students and their parents devote what extra time they have to caring for perfect strangers. The Mills Pond Cares Club at Mills Pond Elementary School have made a difference in the lives needy families across Long Island and most recently helped a children’s hospital in El Salvador in Central America. On Thursday, May 12th, the Mills Pond Cares Club held a walk-a-thon to help purchase a playground set for the children at a hospital in El Salvador.
The Mills Pond Cares Club hosted approximately 60 Fourth and Fifth graders in a walk-a-thon, with a goal to raise $3,900. The group exceeded their initial goal, fundraising a total of $4,242 to cover the cost of the playground set.
Every year, the group picks an organization to help. This School year, the fundraising efforts went to aid Medical Mission International in El Salvador. Medical Mission International provides immediate medical and surgical care to people in underserved regions of the world, especially women and children, with limited access to health care services. Current Medical Mission projects are based in rural El Salvador.
Earlier in the year, Cares Club members organized a Museum Walk, featuring photographs, the language, geography and culture from El Salvador. Mills Pond students have been creating artwork from El Salvador to further enrich this study.
