Meals on Wheels for Senior Citizens

The Smithtown Senior Citizens Department offers a Home Delivered Meals Program for residents ages 60 and over residing within the Town of Smithtown. Hot, nutritious meals are delivered by volunteers to the frail homebound elderly Mondays through Fridays.

Each meal consists of one third of the current recommended dietary allowance for the 60 plus age group. Regular diets are provided, however accommodations for low sodium and diabetic diets can be fulfilled upon request. Food service is contracted with Zan’s Kosher Deli in Lake Grove.

Eligibility Requirements:
To be eligible for Meals on Wheels, applicants must be:
Able to accept responsibility for consumption of meals
Assessed in-home by the Meals on Wheels assessor
Have no family or other persons capable of providing adequate meals
Physically or mentally unable to prepare or provide for their own nutritional needs
Unable to attend a congregate setting and have no alternative through which their nutritional needs can be met

Currently, 115 Town of Smithtown residents participate in the Home Delivered Meals program daily.

A recommended contribution of $2.50 per meal is suggested. Contributions are used to expand services and are returned back to the program. There are no required costs to participate in this program. Funding for this program is provided by the U.S. Administration for Community Living, the New York State Office for the Aging, Suffolk County Office for the Aging, and the Town of Smithtown.
