Over the weekend, late Sunday morning, August 30th, Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers discovered an entangled bird, on the National Grid Northport Platform. The platform, which is just 2 miles north of Northport Power Station, is used to offload fuel for the National Grid Northport Power Station.
Marine Bureau Officers Charles Marchiselli and Michael O’Leary were conducting a Homeland Security check of the platform, at approximately 11:15 a.m. aboard Marine Bravo when they spotted the distressed bird. The two officers observed the animal tangled in string along the railing, when they approached the platform. The two officers derived the plan for Officer O’Leary to distract the bird using a wildlife pole, while Officer Marchiselli wrapped the bird in a blanket to keep it from flapping or injuring itself. Officer Marchiselli then cut the lines away from the bird.
Fortunately for all parties; bird included, there were no injuries. The rescued bird swam away once it was free from entanglement.
