Long Island Comptrollers from Nassau and Suffolk met for the first time yesterday in a Bi-County effort towards fiscal stability to discuss their respective financial situations as well as creating new innovative initiatives to work together for the benefit of Long Island’s 3 million residents. Also present at the meeting were Deputy Comptroller Louis Necroto, and Executive Director of the Audit Division Frank Bayer from Suffolk and Deputy Comptrollers Raymond J. Averna and James A. Garner from Nassau.
Many issues were discussed with particular focus on the Hotel/Motel Tax present in both counties as well as the proposed re-creation of the Sales Tax Compliance Program; both programs are geared towards bringing in more revenue to improve both counties’ cash flow situation. “The meeting was very productive and I look forward to many more between Comptroller Maragos’ office and my own in the future.” Comptroller Kennedy said “Working together we can benefit over 3 million residents in Suffolk and Nassau.”
The Sales Tax Compliance Program, which was in use from 1993-2003 yielded nearly $11 million in sales tax revenues, penalties and interest. Suffolk and Nassau are both seeking the support of New York State Majority Leader Dean Skelos in obtaining funding for the program.
