The Smithtown Fire Department pulled off an extraordinary rescue yesterday morning. The call came in for a Motor Vehicle Accident, at a pond located at Route 25A and Summerset Drive just before 9 AM Monday morning. Firefighters arrived on the scene, to find a Toyota Sedan had crashed through the guardrail and partially submerged in the pond.
After spotting a female driver, trapped in the car, Smithtown Chief of Department Murphy (4-2-30) immediately upgraded the call to a heavy rescue/water rescue. After the call went out, the Kings Park Fire Department Dive team rendezvoused with Smithtown Rescue to extricate the driver.
Kings Park Dive team attended to the driver, using the Smithtown Rescue teams inflatable boat. The team effort resulted in a safe extrication of the unidentified young female, who was immediately transported to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center via Kings Park Ambulance. A secondary search of the pond and surrounding area was launched as a precautionary measure.
Although no other victims were found, a second emergency unfolded while 25A was closed. A separate vehicle attempted to pass through 25A while the water rescue was underway. Smithtown Firefighters and first responders quickly learned that the driver was attempting to transport an emergency patient to the ER at St. Catherine of Siena. A Smithtown Fire Department ambulance was able to intercept the second car to transport the sick patient to the hospital.
The unidentified driver was not charged by Police. The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department.
