Leslie Kennedy Honors Local Veterans

The first annual Veterans Day Ceremony, hosted by the Holiday Inn Express, Stony Brook and co-sponsored by Gold Coast Bank, was held to honor Veterans within all branches of the military on Monday evening. Legislator Leslie Kennedy delivered a special proclamation to Honorees in recognition of their continued service within the Community.

Vietnam War Veteran Daniel Murphy, the proud father of one of this Nation’s greatest heroes; Lt. Michael P. Murphy, was among those honored for his work. The Military Order of the Purple Heart member has been a leading voice throughout the Country, assisting Veterans to cope with PTSD, survivor’s guilt and wounded warriors as they transition to life at home. He continues to preserve his son’s memory through the Lt. Michael Murphy Foundation, Scholarships and annual events like the Run Around the Lake in Lake Ronkonkoma.

Deputy Executive Director Jonathan Spier of the Long Island State Veterans Home was also honored for his work, providing state of the art, comprehensive medical, nursing and ancillary services for Veterans. Legislator

Leslie Kennedy presented Bruce and Tanya Knapp of Smithtown with their plaque and proclamation for their service to their country. Bruce and Tanya Knapp, served in the United States Navy. The couple met while stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for two years. Together, the Knapps continue to serve the community at home.  Bruce Knapp is a member of the Board of Directors for the PAL League. Tanya Knapp teaches catechism at Saints Philip & James in St. James.
