Legislator Kennedy Honors Intel Semifinalist

Legislator Kennedy Honors Intel Semi-Finalist, Commack Student David Li

Members of the Suffolk County Legislature had the first general meeting of the year this Tuesday in Hauppauge. But before a day of law making, Legislator Kennedy had the distinct pleasure of honoring one of Commack’s brightest students, David Li. The Commack High School Student has been selected as one of 300 students Country-wide to be named an Intel Semifinalist. Legislator Leslie Kennedy presented David Li with a proclamation before the legislature in recognition of his hard work.

“David is a bright student and I am honored to be able to present him with a proclamation, he is an exemplary student and I was happy to see him again this morning, I am confident he will go on to do wonderful work in the field of science and technology” – Legislator Leslie Kennedy

David Li was honored by Suffolk County Legislature last summer for his Wireless Tracking System for At-home Durable Medical Equipment during Natural Disasters.  The system is designed to save the many lives, depending on power-operated Life support systems during a natural disaster.  If any of these men and women where to lose power in a natural disaster, their survival depends on getting each patient to a hospital or designated place with electricity  to operate each life support system. David Li developed a radio network that would alert hospitals and patient refugee centers when a patient has an outage. Li’s system works without cell phone or internet access. This urgent life saving system won David Li his spot as an Intel Semifinalist.

About the Intel STS Competition:

The Intel STS is the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science competition, providing an important forum for original research that is recognized and reviewed by a national jury of professional scientists. Only 300 students nationwide are chosen as semifinalists and their schools annually. Out of those 300, 40 students will be chosen as finalists to head to Washington, D.C. for final judging, display their work to the public, and meet with notable scientists and government leaders. Each year, Intel STS semifinalists and finalists compete for $1.6 million in awards.
