Legislator Leslie Kennedy (R-Nesconset) kicks off Women’s History Month at Brookhaven’s Tribute to Women in Commerce and Professions
On Wednesday, March 1st, Legislator Kennedy hit the ground running to begin Women’s History Month right at the Holiday Inn Express in Stony Brook. Brookhaven’s Tribute to Women in Commerce and Professions, was held in honor of the many inspiring women in our community who have achieved success in their professional lives. The event also put a spotlight on a number of programs that are locally available to help women who are in need.
During the event, the town of Brookhaven honored 19 Women of Distinction for the year 2016 with the first Annual Edna Gerrard Excelsior Award. The women honored were all members of the female empowerment group, Decisions. The organization works to help women succeed in various aspects of life.
“It was a privilege to be a part of this event to honor and support women; there are so many amazing women in my community. I am so proud of all that Decisions does in support of women,” – Legislator Leslie Kennedy.
The Town of Brookhaven’s Office of Women’s services, offers a wide number of services, groups and events, to assist, educate and empower women in the community. The town offers a domestic violence group, women’s support groups and divorce information classes. In addition to events like the All Day Women’s Conference & Expo, the Dress For Success program in Brookhaven has outfitted close to 5,000 women with business professional attire.
