Stony Brook resident, Byron Lane Breaks U.S. Record Over 48 hours Running/Walking on Treadmill for Friends of Karen, Helping Critically ill Children and Their Families
Stony Brook resident, Byron Lane spent the better part of the three day weekend beating a U.S. record at Energy Fitness in Saint James. The Harborfields teacher spent 48 hours straight, running and occasionally walking, 160.86 miles on a treadmill, to raise awareness and funds for Friends of Karen. The New York based charity has helped over 15,000 critically ill children and their families, by covering medical and basic living expenses, providing emotional support and outreach programs. Lane not only broke the National record, which was previously 147 miles in 48 hours, but his record is now ranked tenth in the world.
“No one is prepared for a life-threatening illness to strike their child… Friends of Karen provides the support that lets parents focus on what’s most important: their child.” – Byron Lane, Ultra Runner
Smithtown today was on scene to witness the last hour of Byron’s two day run/walk. Energy Fitness was packed with family and friends, cheering him on, singing songs to keep him going. Lane’s daughter, Olivia ran alongside of him for the final stretch while his wife, Melora stood beside the treadmills, checking in on his state of mind throughout. Both of Lane’s parents were alongside of him for the final stretch, jumping on a treadmill next to him for the occasional pat on the back. Even the members at Energy fitness stopped by to cheer, before beginning their workouts. During the final minutes, the crowd clapped and yelled to keep Byron going strong, while live streaming on Facebook. It was truly an unforgettable moment in time.
Byron Lane has been a runner since he was a child, according to his very proud mother, who says he had so much energy growing up, that they needed to channel it somewhere. They got him a pair of running shoes and he’s been doing it ever since. Lane runs everyday, participating in Ultra Marathons and various courses, where he can fundraise to help make a difference, like he did this weekend.
Donations from this weekend’s event has been extended for the next week. To make a donation in support of Byron Lane’s efforts email: enduro.runner@gmail.com.
