The Kennedy’s clean up Lake Ronkonkoma, Long Island’s largest freshwater lake.
Over the weekend, Legislator Leslie Kennedy, alongside husband Comptroller John Kennedy, were a part of a large group of volunteers who spent the day cleaning up on the Islip side of Lake Ronkonkoma.
“For as long as I can remember the lake has had its issues, it is finally time that we stand up and do something about the state of this lake. My hope is that we can start working to get this Lake and its shore line back to the way it once was… I am very proud of the work that these volunteers have done, and I am happy to help them with their task.” – Legislator Leslie Kennedy
Over fifty volunteers, ranging in age from young children to senior citizens, who are frustrated with the state of the lake shore and conditions decided to take matters into their own hands. The group consists of residents who are highly motivated to take action, got the ball rolling, by cleaning waste, natural debris and man made trash from the beach shores.
Lake Ronkonkoma is owned by Smithtown, Brookhaven and Islip. Residents have been frustrated with the lack of effort from the towns to clean up what was once an immaculate beach resort. In an effort to demand results, the group, Save Lake Ronkonkoma, created an opportunity to raise awareness on Saturday, generating news coverage and positive attention. The Town of Brookhaven contributed to the clean up on Saturday, by donating garbage bags and dumpsters. Suffolk County will begin cleaning up the water quality and pollution in the environment at Lake Ronkonkoma, slated to begin in September.
