Due to new regulations and changes in the recycling industry, the Town of Smithtown must return to “Dual Stream” curbside recycling on January 1st, 2019. This change is due to changing market conditions which have rendered some currently collected materials unrecyclable.
New standards for the purity and cleanliness of recyclables have been established by those who actually use collected materials in the manufacturing of new products. Mixing unacceptable material with otherwise acceptable recyclables renders the whole container of material unusable.
The requirements for “clean recycling,” due to new policies in the marketplace, include the exclusion of glass for residential curbside recycling, effective November 28th, 2018. Residents can still drop off glass recyclables at Municipal Services Facility in Kings Park with two more drop off locations (Town Hall in Smithtown, The Highway Department in Nesconset) coming later this week.
In an effort to provide residents the most cost-effective and efficient services, we have joined in an intermunicipal Recycling effort with partnering villages and Towns.
Over the next few weeks, the Town of Smithtown will take every opportunity to educate and inform residents about these changes and provide our new upcoming recycling schedule.
Residents can use any garbage bin they have handy, as long as it has a Recycling Sticker on it. Residents can pick up free recycle stickers at the Department of Environment and Waterways, Municipal Services Facility, or request one via mail.
