The Common Core Curriculum standards are a hot button topic for parents and teachers across the nation. Nearly a half of a decade ago, the new program was thought of as an accurate means to assess student body progress and develop the necessary skills in order for children to excel on a global scale. Presently, even State and Federal officials are beginning to take notice in light of recent protests and valid points against the test-based accountability which the common core curriculum standards promote. Between the current curriculum controversy and classroom overcrowding, the local Board of Education Chapters in our community have their work cut out for them. As Elections approach for the Hauppauge Board of Education, Smithtown Today sat down with candidates; Stacey Weisberg and Michael Buscarino to hear how they would contribute if elected.
Hauppauge resident and veteran teacher of 20 years, Stacey Weisberg brings a first hand knowledge of the demands being put on children, teachers, administrators and parents by Albany and Washington. The happily married, mother of two is an elementary educator in the Northport-East Northport school district. Her unique insight and ability to contribute experience from a neighboring school district, allows Weisberg to critique policies and equip colleagues with hindsight, already knowing what works and what does not. Stacey Weisberg believes maintaining small classrooms is a vital part of engaging students and cultivating young minds.
“We also need to continually monitor the programs we have and evaluate the programs we need all the while still being fiscally responsible. I intend to rally for fair and reasonable standardized testing for our students. I want to listen to what the community has to say about our District and suggestions they may have to make it better. I want to bring those ideas to the Board and administration. Maintaining an open line of communication is the foundation of a strong and progressive district.” – Stacey Weisberg
Hauppauge resident, Michael Buscarino is a Father of Four children currently enrolled in the Hauppauge School District. The former NYPD officer, currently serves the Suffolk County Police Department and bares witness to the many dangers such as heroin, prescription drug use, cyber bullying and underage drinking in every school district across Long Island. Buscarino is an advocate of facing such issues head on, without bias. The big family man and Assistant Cub Master hopes to utilize his experience in law enforcement to create a comprehensive evaluation of all security measures throughout the district.
“There are many issues going on in education on the state and federal level which have a negative impact on our district. Our children are being over-tested at a level not consistent with their classroom experience. We need to continue to stand against these practices and allow our teachers to teach all subjects to all students without becoming consumed by test preparation.” – Michael Buscarino
