Halloween DIY Decor

With only two weeks until Halloween, you can’t walk down the block without the haunting visions of tacky spider webs covering beautiful landscapes, blow up Jack-O-Lanterns and gaudy goblins and ghouls hanging from the fall kissed trees. It’s hard not to fall victim to it all. The already scarce inventory of tasteful Halloween Decor available in stores is overpriced and the time it takes to decorate is null and void. Our resident Holiday Decor Diva has come up with a few great do-it-yourself crafts that combine items you already own with a few inexpensive supplies from the local Arts and Crafts Shop.

Wicked Witch Feet:

Supplies:

  • Old pair of shoes (We used a pair of doll shoes)Wicked Witch Feet
  • Sparkle Spray Paint (black or red)
  • Halloween tights (Use thick cotton tights for best results)
  • Poly fil stuffing
  • Glue gun and glue
  • Scissors

Instructions:

Spray the shoes with the glitter spray paint and let dry according to the paint instructions. Cut each leg off of the tights, as far up as possible. Stuff each stocking with the Poly Fil, leaving about 5 inches of room at the top. Pack down the stuffing as tight as possible and tie each leg at the top. Using a glue gun, line the sole of the shoe with plenty of glue, and continue to glue the inner sides of the shoe. (note: glue the sides last to avoid a glue burn). Insert the foot of the stocking into the shoe, pushing it far down to assure the shoe stays firmly in place. Allow 10 minutes to dry before placing in desired spot. We put ours in a planter but this works great under a doormat or under a bush as well.
Witches Spell Book Lair

witches spell booksSupplies:

  • Old Hard Cover Books (Dark Covers are best)
  • Silver or Gold Paint Marker or Puffy Paint
  • Candles of Various Sizes and Colors
  • Plastic Scull or rodent

Instructions:

Using a Paint Marker (found at Michael’s Crafts for $0.99) or Puffy Paint if you like a little Texture, Write Different Titles down each Books Spine. If you are not secure with handwriting skills, use a stencil. We used Curses, Spells, Potions and Brews for Book Titles.  You can get original with this.  Have fun and maybe personalize it. Warning: Do not name the witch after your Mother-In-Law! This has a way of biting you back. Once the paint is dry, Use candles as book ends and add some creepy accents like a scull or fake rat.

Easy Accents:

A) Place Fake Black Crows on shelves and molding around the House

B) Turn an ornamental flower pot into a Cauldron, by filling it with Witches Brew (Fall Potpourri). Dress it up with a distressed Cheese Cloth as a mummy table runner.

C) Fill Vases or decorative Apothecary Jars up with black beads, sculls or plastic spiders to tie the whole spooky theme together.
