Fall Planter Inspiration

It’s the first official day of fall, but we have some lovely weather ahead for some weekend gardening. Give those beautiful planters a fabulous harvest makeover for the new season. We went to our favorite Nursery and mixed and matched until we found unique fall planter ideas ripe for your picking. The best part… we left the mums out of it!

Grassy Fab Fall Planter

fall planter inspiration gardenMake your fall flowers last by using ornamental grasses and coleus with a wide color pallet. If you have large enough patio planters, add purple fountain grass first. Next add sunset or red velvet coleus to one side (opposite sides on the other planter) and sweet potato vine to the other side. Fill the center with lemon grass. If you still have room add a few accents like creeping jenny (spills down the edges) and a flowering filler like superbells or lantana, which is having a fantastic season this year.

Ornamental Fall Planter

fall_flower_planters2Always start with the “Thriller” which is the highest point in the planter. For fall any ornamental grass (fountain grass, firecracker grass) will look lovely. But if you love fall holidays or just have deer problems, try using Gran Altura ornamental grass (they look like corn stalks). Next, center a large ornamental cabbage or kale at the front of the planter. Fill the space between the grasses and the main focal point with light colored leafy plants like Lambs ear or dusty miller (silver), Vinca, Pansies and ornamental peppers. Last add crawling accents like ivy, creeping jenny, white licorice, or my absolute favorite, Pilea.

Blossoming Endless Summer Fall Planter

fall planter inspiration gardenPreserve the scents and colors of Summer with a fall planter that’s packed with colors and textures galore. Start by adding your thrillers; Rosemary and Blue Fescue on one side and a bright colored cockscomb celosia in the center. Next, fill your planter up with dusty miller, coral bells, yellow or orange Zinnia or Vinca. Finally add spillers like sweet potato vine, golden oregano or thyme. Mixing the herbs with flowers and plants give off a delicious scent that will last until the frost!
