Smithtown F.D. Tackles Early Morning Smithtown Home Fire While Residents Were On Vacation
The Smithtown Fire Department responded to a possible structural fire, at approximately 3:40 AM this morning. The call specified a possible fire somewhere in the vicinity of Roundabout & Woodland, in Smithtown. Firefighters responded to the possible scene, where they quickly discovered a home engulfed in flames at 46 Roundabout Road . Upon arrival, the house fire was upgraded to a fully involved structural fire.
After confirmation that the house was vacant, an exterior attack was ordered by Chief of Department Murphy. A water stream was provided by Engine 4-2-4 from its deck gun, while Ladder 4-2-7 began a bucket attack from its tower ladder guns to get the blaze under control. Handlines were also deployed around the home. At approximately 5:20 AM, the fire was brought under control. At that point, firefighters began to survey the scene for hot spots and began an initial investigation to identify the origin of the fire.
The homeowners were away on vacation at the time of the incident. No firefighters were injured. All responders left the scene at approximately 6:20 AM. In Addition to the Smithtown Fire Department, the St. James and Nesconset Fire Departments provided mutual aid, manpower and Chiefs support. Smithtown Ambulance EMS Company 6 was also on scene with a mutual aid assist from the Nissequogue Fire Department. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Smithtown Fire Marshal.
