Comptroller Kennedy Urges LIPA Board of Trustees to Correct Rates for Long Island Ratepayers
Suffolk County Comptroller John M. Kennedy, Jr. appeared before the LIPA Board of Trustees meeting today to strongly urge the Board to re-examine and correct the rate categories of all ratepayers on Long Island to ensure that no one is paying more for power than they should.
In addition to appearing before the Board, Comptroller Kennedy also sent out a letter addressed to all 8 Trustees and David Daly, President and COO of PSE&G Long Island with regard to specific rate categories of 12 buildings in Suffolk County that are improperly labelled under the Rate 285 when they should be Rate 281 for the past 3 years.
“I was glad to attend the Trustees meeting today and express my concerns for all of the ratepayers of Suffolk County.” Comptroller Kennedy stated “The idea of ratepayers being not only misclassified but paying more than they should is unacceptable and LIPA and PSE&G LI need to do all it can to rectify the problem immediately.”
The Comptroller’s office is seeking $121,206.84 from LIPA/PSE&G LI based on erroneous billing for 36 months beginning January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2015. A preliminary review of the 484 separate billing locations throughout Suffolk County’s multiple buildings, pumps, lights and other electrical points of service, revealed that 12 locations classified as rate category 285 should in fact, be classified as rate category 281. As a result of this misclassification there has been an overcharging to Suffolk County for these twelve buildings.
