Comptroller Kennedy Opposes PSE&G Double Dipping Attempt

Suffolk County Comptroller, John M. Kennedy, Jr. declared opposition to PSE&G Long Island’s proposed four percent hike in rates earlier this month. The Comptroller’s protests are with good cause, stating PSE&G rates have continuously increased in Suffolk County, post Hurricane Sandy and the takeover of LIPA.

“PSE&G Long Island has not given enough evidence that this rate hike for the residents of Suffolk County is necessary… In fact PSE&G Long Island is double dipping from the taxpayers’ dollars by raising the rates on not only residents but also Suffolk County, whose revenue is derived from the taxpayers.” – Comptroller, John M. Kennedy, Jr.

The Comptroller noted the 1.62% Property Tax Cap which many organization and municipalities struggle to maintain. Kennedy questioned the reasoning behind PSE&G Long Island’s sense of entitlement in believing they were exempt from the cap. After asserting his opposition, Comptroller Kennedy filed for intervener status with the New York State Department of Public Service. To do so would give the Comptroller the increased capabilities necessary to defend Suffolk County Residents from further unjustified increases.
