Resident Smithtown High School Journalist Jenna Barbone hit the campus to interview a few peers who have chosen Colleges to attend in the Fall. We were blown away to learn of all the thought, challenges and influences which went into making these independent decisions. The very same resolutions which will most definitely shape the next chapters of their lives.
1.) Why did you choose your school? Does it have something to do with the profession you want to have in the future?
Emily Oliver: I chose Dowling College because they gave me an affordable price and it’s close to home so I don’t have to dorm. They also have an English major that I’m very interested in.
Immy Folkerts: I choose The University of Central Florida because of the amazing academic program for my major. They have an awesome campus and it is not only state of the art but it’s an affordable school.
Olivia Recine: I choose Farmingdale State College because it has an excellent program with a 90% passing rate.
2.) What will be the hardest challenge in leaving home?
Emily Oliver: I’ll be living home but the only challenge is I’ll be commuting a longer drive then high school.
Immy Folkerts: The hardest challenge of leaving home is definitely not being able to see my friends and family. I’m going to be homesick for the first couple of weeks.
Olivia Recine: I’ll be living home and commuting.
3.) What made you choose what you’d like to be “when you grow up” and what would your dream job be?
Emily Oliver: I would like to be a high school English teacher. I didn’t decide this until my junior year in high school when I had Mr. Kirchenko. His teaching style has made me enjoy English a lot more then I used to. He has influenced me to want to become an English teacher and use his teaching techniques. I also really enjoy reading.
Immy Folkerts: My dream job is to be a physician preferably working in a hospital setting.
Olivia Recine: I would like to be a nurse practitioner because I love helping people. Almost all my friends come to me for advice and I enjoy being there for people in need.
4.) Name someone that has played a major role in your choosing of a career. A friend, family member, teacher or a famous role model?
Emily Oliver: Like I said before my English teacher Mr.Kirchenko has played a major role in choosing a career. I was nervous because I didn’t know what I wanted to do. Most of my friends have known since middle school but I’m glad eleventh grade English has helped me decide. My Aunt Kim has always persuaded me to make my own decision and do what makes me happy as well.
Immy Folkerts: Choosing my career was very difficult but my pediatrician had actually convinced me of all the amazing things doctors do and how great it feels to help others whom are ill.
Olivia Recine: My mother has played a big role in deciding what I wanted to do.
5.) Would you see yourself returning to Smithtown to raise a family of your own after you’ve succeeded in this career?
Emily Oliver: No absolutely not, I do not like the area and will not be returning if I don’t have too.
Immy Folkerts: I most likely will not return to Smithtown to raise a family. I have always been more of a southern girl and would like to work around where I had attended college since I would have already made friends and gotten accustomed to the area.
Olivia Recine: Yes, I will definitely stay in Smithtown.
